RECORDING LIVE MUSIC IN
CHIDDINGLY CHURCH, EAST SUSSEX
Choirs have sung and musicians have played in Chiddingly Church and there's
one thing they all agree upon - for whatever reason, the Church has very
excellent acoustics, and these musicians themselves have suggested and
recommended that we offer the Church as a venue for recording music - choral
works, string quartets and similar. It is not a large building - it seats
ca 120 people, so large choirs, orchestras would probably find us too small in
size but for the smaller groups of musicians, we are told that we should be
ideal.
The church is always open during normal daylight hours, so the first
essential is to pay a visit. We are 8 miles east of Lewes, served by
railway from London Victoria. Our post code is BN8 6HE, and you can look
us up on www.streetmap.co.uk
Some points for consideration.
Car parking: there is a free, open,
public car park opposite Chiddingly Church. It is owned and maintained by Chiddingly
Parish Council.
Refreshment: the Six Bells public house is 50
yards walk down the road. There is another pub at Golden Cross - the
Golden Cross - about 2 miles away on the A22, and there is The Gun at Gun Hill
which is more of a bistro than pub and is also about 2 miles away.
Accommodation: there is excellent B&B
available in the parish at The Hale
Farm House. There is more B&B not quite so close and of course Eastbourne,
half an hour away, has hundreds of hotels and Guest Houses.
Essential services: the Church building
does not have toilets. There is an arrangement with the Chiddingly Village
Hall close by (50 yards) that when the Church is booked for events the toilets
in the Village Hall may be made available. The Village Hall is an entirely
separate organisation, and arrangements need to be made directly with
them. The Booking Secretary is Mrs Jenny Bean Tel: 01825 872393.
The Church - is still a fully open House of
Worship. The suggestion that the building is made available for recording
live music must take into consideration the primary purpose of the
building. There would need to be discussion about how long any recording
session would take; how many hours and days, and at what times of day.
Heating: the church heating has recently been
fully overhauled, and can work to excess. You will not be cold and hands,
fingers and vocal chords can be kept more than warm enough to perform
efficiently.
Lighting: all the interior lighting has very
recently been fully overhauled, and there is very adequate lighting.
Power - there are ample electrical sockets, but
if you need more than what may be classed as "normal use" we would
need to discuss. The supply is 3-phase.
Organ - details are here.
We are told it is a very good example of a Baroque parish church organ with a
fine tone. It is regularly tuned, serviced and maintained.
Any questions - please contact the Hon
Treasurer, Robin Symington.
