TEXTILES
ALTAR FRONTALS - CHANCEL
a) Trinity Green Damask, h. 220 x w. 88 cm lined with heavy green linen.
Matching green and gold silk fringe at lower edge.
b) William Morris design - cream background with lilies, irises, carnations and tulips in shades of gold, green, light crimson, grey and cream. Birds, bunches of grapes and lilies in gold with green outline. Side silk fringes 2.5 cm in alternate colours, light crimson, grey, cream, green and gold. Base fringes 4 cm with same colouring. A 'plum' colour lining 220 cm in length plus 28 cm folded behind fringe onto the William Morris design.
c) Whitsun red damask 90 cm deep in 3 pieces. 33 cm folded under fringe. Width of panels 46 cm - 129 cm - 49 cm. Two strips of machined gold braid 2.5 cm to cover seams of central panel to side panels. In the centre is a gold fabric Latin fleuree cross measuring h. 49 w. 32 cm. The cross is edged with four rows of gold jap. The rays are couched goldjap.
d) Royal Blue damask, with a base 4 cm silk fringe in alternating blue and gold. Side fringe 2.5 cm in same design. Lined with black cotton cloth with 33 cm folded behind each side fringe.
ALTAR CARPETS - CHANCEL
a) One Royal Blue carpet 1. 324 x w. 273 cm.
b) Behind the Altar, one Persian style runner rug 1. 314 x w. 68.5 cm dark blue/light
crimson/black/white/light blue/off white/pint. (Worn).
ALTAR COVERINGS - CHANCEL
a) One light blue linen covering 1. 300 x w. 32 cm hem stitched on short
edge and machine seamed long length.
b) A fitted cream linen altar covering to which is joined a pelmet 19 cm deep. Trinity Green 'pelmet' with 6.5 cm fringe alternating with light green and gold. This pelmet is used with all four interchangeable altar frontals. These frontals are permanently hanging on rods for use at front of altar in 9 cm specially designed space.
PRIE DIEU - BENEATH ALTAR
h. 64 x w. 22 x d. 10 cm with a hassock attached by six sacking strips and
studs. Has the logo of the Women's Institute, a green tree with white lettering
of 'WI" in centre of tree outline with the dates of 1918 and 1993 on either
side of gold lettering on a crimson ground with gold lettering: CHIDDINGLY
1918-1993.
HASSOCK - BENEATH ALTAR
A dove with ring, bible and lillies on a blue ground. Label on underside
"This piece of needlework worked by Rosemary Murrell".
ALTAR RAIL TAPESTRY KNEELER - ALTAR
l. 460 x w. 32 x d. 13 cm. Jacksons canvas and wool purchased by various people
for Chiddingly Church. Mrs Meakin of Whitesmith started this kneeler and
designed it onto graph paper. Joan Burgess completed it after the death of Mrs
Meakin. The design is of a Maltese Cross in yellow and red at the centre and on either side working outwards to left and right there is a dolphin from the
French family coat of arms in white with red fins, a green palm, a shield from
the Jefferay Monument in yellow with black outlines, a green palm and a Mitre in
red and yellow, all on a pale blue background. The work was stitched by Elaine
Birch. Dedicated 1976
BANNERS - SOUTH AISLE
a) Banner in tricolour Red, White and Blue parallel stripes h. 119 x w. 100
cm in nylon material with black bold lettering LACHELLE - CHIDDINGLY with lurex
gold fringe on three sides.
b) Processional banner of the Royal British Legion h. 120 x w. 80 cm Top strip dark blue ground with Union Flag in left fly. Central strip in bright yellow with dark blue lettering BRITISH LEGION and underneath CHIDDINGLY & DISTRICT BRANCH. Bottom strip in dark blue. Banner surrounded with yellow fringe and two cords with tassels attached at top left.
c) Girl Guides Banner l. 116 x w. 84 cm in bright yellow with white lettering
1st CHIDDINGLY underneath centrally. Emblem - fleur-de-lys in white on a circle of black- with the words in white underneath BE PREPARED. Yellow cord and tassels
d) Boy Scouts Banner 1. 116 cm x w. 84 cm in dark green cotton with white lettering 1st CHIDDINGLY underneath centrally. Emblem - fleur-de-lys in white on circle of mauve - with the words in white underneath BE PREPARED. Green cord and tassels.
HASSOCKS - BODY OF CHURCH
Chiddingly Church is well provided with hassocks there being 102 in all,
present on the day of recording. In the Nave there are 68 embroidered hassocks
in various designs in bold colours most of which have been worked by
parishioners in cross stitch. There are labels on the back of some hassocks
which indicate the embroiderer and in a few cases a dedication. There are 28
well stuffed carpet covered hassocks with small oval shaped handles located
mainly in the choir stalls in the Chancel. There
are also 12 vinyl dark blue damask covered hassocks. The main supplier of the embroidered hassocks which include the design, canvas, wool and interior pads was Jacksons Rug Craft Ltd. Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.
