WOODWORK
ALTAR - CHANCEL - E End - 1916
a) Rectangular frame with plain square edged Altar-top.
b) The north end has a roughly sawn edge. (see Gradine next)
c) Front divided into three bays, sides into one bay each. Rear divided into two bays.
d) The top of each bay contains spandrel brackets with bevelled lower edges shaped into a double lancet with trefoil bevelled piercing and each end cantilevered with a half spandrel bracket with single lancet.
e) Most of the members of the framework, which stands on a base of rails, are chamfered on the outside.
GRADINE - CHANCEL
a) Purpose built side table of rectangular frame and matching design to the
Altar, attached to south wall and appears to be sawn from left hand end of Altar
table, (see above).
b) Applied moulded block with reeded grooves centrally placed.
CHAIRS (2) - CHANCEL
a) Glastonbury type chairs with solid framed seats and raked back panels and
with X-shaped legs joined by an octagonal stretcher. Geometrically shaped arms
with slightly rounded arm rest tops from seat to back, each held by wooden pins.
b) The underside of each chair has been branded CHIDDINGLY CHURCH in sans serif roman capitals.
LITANY DESK - CHANCEL - 1976 approx
Wooden desk, comprising
a) slightly sloping top with brass memorial plate
b) narrow shelf below top with rear stop
c) lower vertical rail pierced with three trefoils, tenoned and wedged through rails
d) screen between shelf and rail pierced with three lancet shaped openings with chamfered edges, indented triangular mould in each comer and open triangular piercing each head of lancets
e) sides formed from vertical symmetrically moulded panels cyma recta reverse og and astragal moulds and simple lancet piercing
f) fee beneath each side panel with cyma recta and astragal moulds
g) plate kneeler, hinged to extensions of feet at rear, with two additional feet cyma recta astragal mould at rear and stuffed kneeler fitted with cloth material straps.

SMALL LECTERN - CHANCEL
Wooden readers desk,
a) top sloping down from flat area to slightly rounded bead upstand
b) enclosed narrow shelf under stop chamfered front edge
c) vertical rail, tenoned and wedged through sides with star of David lightly incised to rear
d) sides square moulded to rear and with plain, semi-circular, and sloping profile with double chamfered vertical edges
e) plain, rounded end feet with round cut end to base.
COMMUNION RAIL - CHANCEL - Ca 1916
a) Flat topped with moulded underside and vertically hinged central portion
above square moulded posts in two of three panels. Central section with brass
counter flap hinge.
b) Immediately beneath the rail, open and framed section bearing ornamental carving.
c) Moulded base plate supports with vertical posts.
BENCHES (CHOIR STALLS) - CHANCEL - Ca 1951
a) Two rows of identical choir stalls consisting of two benches each capable
of seating six persons plus two additional seats of slightly deeper proportions
with elbow rests, forming an integral part of the main structure.
b) The benches have raked back seats with flushed bead panels affixed to both East and West walls of the chancel.
c) Each bench incorporates a desk top music stand. The fronts bear three bead recessed panels each with two sub-panels with quadrant comer moulding.
d) The whole structure is based on a wooden platform.
e) Furniture fittings are:- West stall (E.End) Brass bracket with metal cup at bottom to hold Church Warden's/Verger's Wand.
f) There is a memorial inscription incised on the West front side in classical roman capitals and an incised latin cross fleur on the East front side.
THESE STALLS ARE ERECTED IN MEMORY OF LOUISA ELIZABETH ROWE 1880-1934
LECTERN - CHANCEL - Ca 1986
Plain and free standing with desk top and one shelf under. Applied latin
cross on front panel.
PULPIT - S TRANSEPT - Ca 1750
(a) The pulpit has an hexagonal shaped drum with only five panels visible,
one of which serves as a door from the pulpit leading to the stairway. Each
panel has attached astragal beading with curved comers topped by a beaded and
fluted moulded cornice.
(b) From its appearance, the base of the pulpit suggests a later renovation from the original upper section with newer moulded panels reaching to the floor.
(c) The interior reveals an integral desk top with microphone attachments and three sloping shelves with a central panel deeper than the others.
(d) A rear panelled pilaster divided into three by applied mouldings with the upper part bearing blind tracery and side pieces of fluted carving leads to an over-head hexagonal sounding board.
(e) The underside of the sounding board bears marquetry in the form of a sun burst motif comprising a corona of inlaid boxwood and a slightly raised circular mahogany sun.
(f) The rim of the sounding board is heavily carved with fish shaped motifs, straight dentil and peardrop friezes and is surmounted by a waisted conical canopy and capped with an urn-shaped finial
(g) The stairway comprises four newel posts and four wooden steps leading to a landing which is angled to enter the pulpit. The hand rail is moulded and has plain squared balusters some of which have been fashioned in the form of a cross of no specific design.
The pulpit was once a 'three decker' with stalls for parson and clerk.
BENCH - S TRANSEPT - Ca 1973
(a) Against the East wall is a bench the back panel of which has five equal
moulded sections leading into a solid plain seat under which are shaped moulded
feet at each end.
(b)At the top centre of the back panel is a memorial plaque inscribed with incised upper case roman lettering.
THIS PEW WAS PLACED HERE BY HIS WIFE DELIA IN LOVING MEMORY OF WILLIAM LATHAM 2ND BARON BAILLIEU 1916-1973.
MEMORIAL CASE - S AISLE - 1996
(a) Round headed display case with pair of simple vertically placed moulded
full height solid doors with brass cupboard lock at base of left hand leaf.
(b) Doors moulded on the solid to form four panels in the shape of a simple latin cross when closed. At date of inspection these doors were slightly warped. (October 1997)
(c) Internally glazed to receive illustrated description of Jefferay monument.
BELL DISPLAY CASE - 2000
Glazed hexagonal show case with
a) flat top and sides, rear side perforated eight times for ventilation
b) hexagonal wooden base with moulded glazing bead
c) bell (formerly third bell 1633 inscribed round upper level).

BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE STAND - S AISLE - 1944
(a) Free standing desk top with glazed viewing panel supported on an
integral straight legged open table.
(b) Incised in upper case classical roman lettering.

PRIEST'S CHAIR - S AISLE
(a) Cinquefoil headed moulded chamfered solid panel back with applied spade
shaped shield. Ogival shaped moulded bracket elbow rests with chamfered moulded
comer pieces terminating in octagonal columns with moulded heads and evidence of
missing finials.
(b) Back - plain panel in-fill. Seat - plain and solid. Legs - plain, heavy squared.
Given by Miss Millie Dayrell, daughter of Rev. Francis Dayrell who was vicar of a parish near Aberystwyth.
TABLE - S AISLE
(a) Half moon shaped table on three turned tapered legs with triangular
shaped shelf at lower end.
(b) A Visitors' Book lays on the table
DOOR - S AISLE - Ca 1947
(a) INTERIOR - Heavily constructed double door opening inwards -framed and
ledged with vertical jointed boarding set in an oak frame with brass hinges.
(b) Each leaf contains three panels with stopped chamfered moulding.
(c) Wrought iron bolts top and bottom of right leaf with corresponding shoots.
(d) Suffolk latch with turning latch handle.
(e) Top wrought iron draw bolt, pivoted with security eye.
(f) Bottom strapped steel centrally pivoted with end hinged as hasp and staple to receive fitted padlock.
(g) Left leaf- Memorial plaque engraved in upper case roman capitals (see below).
(h) EXTERIOR - Four vertical boards in each leaf with splayed weather board at bottom, (no moulding)
(i) One leaf is perforated to receive latch - now missing.
(j) Four false wrought iron strap hinges terminating in a fleur-de-lys design and fixed with square studs.
IN LOVING MEMORY OF WILFRED EDGAR BOWDEN PILOT OFFICER MISSING, PRESUMED KILLED ON OPERATIONS OVER GERMANY APRIL 20/21ST, 1941 AGED 20 YEARS.
Son of Mr & Mrs H.E. Bowden of Horam, East Sussex. Canadian citizen, 99 Squadron RAFVR, no known grave, commemorated in panel No. 31 Runnymede RAF Memorial.
TOWER SCREEN - W PORCH
The tower screen extends south to north of the entire width of the nave
entrance to the west porch tower and comprises three bays each of two vertical
sections of different sizes. The central bay contains a pair of double half
glazed doors in lancet style surmounted by a decorated frieze and balustrade.
The left hand bay contains 6 panels. The central bay 4 panels + 2 doors. The right hand bay contains 7 panels.
The left hand panel bears a memorial plaque incised and filled with white sans serif lettering in upper and lower case.

COMMANDMENT BOARDS - TOWER ARCH
Two boards, one each side of screen, lancet shape, moulded frame. The
Commandments in OE gothic, gilded lettering black on grey background. Roman
numbers, decorated gilded capital to first word of each, with florets,
alternately red & blue.
SACRISTY SCREEN - NORTH AISLE - Memorial plate dated 1983.
Timber squared framed panelled with square panels, with internal flat arch
door.
Softwood framing, birch faced ply panels, wrought iron furniture.
"This Sacristy Screen was errected in memory of Joseph John Saville Garner GCMG Baron of Chiddingly 1908-83 a former member of this Church and Congregation", incised bronze, sans serif capitals filled white.
DOOR - NORTH AISLE - Ca 1947
(a) INTERIOR -Heavily constructed double door opening inwards - framed and
ledged with vertical jointed boarding set in an oak frame with brass hinges.
(b) Each leaf contains three panels with stopped chamfered moulding.
(c) Wrought iron bolts top and bottom of right leaf with corresponding shoots, 2 no. locking security bolts on right leaf.
(d) Suffolk latch with turning latch handle.
(e) Top wrought iron bolt, pivoted with security hook.
(f) Right leaf- memorial engraved in upper case Roman capitals in middle rail
(g) EXTERIOR- Four vertical boards in each leaf (no moulding).
(h) Four wrought iron false strap hinges terminating in a fleur de lys design and fixed with square studs.
(i) Wrought iron looped handle, twisted, shield shaped key escutcheon internally and brass Yale cylinder night latch, silver colour internally.

LECTERN - NAVE - 1912
Book desk in form of eagle with outstretched wings, head turned slightly to
right, standing on rough-hewn base formed from four blocks to resemble rock, all
resting on irregular eight-sided base. Brass inset memorial plaque, which has
black margin line and red patee cross at each corner. Lettering in uppercase
decorated serif style with larger red capital letters.
In memory of member of Richardson family presented by Alan Richardson, 1912.

PEWS - NAVE AND AISLES - 19thC
There are six sets (totalling 25) of pews.
The seats are made up of 2 plain boards with vertical post struts beneath at intervals. Each bench has a horizontal panelled back in stopped chamfered frame, normally four per bench. Rear and front benches of 2 main blocks forming transverse aisle have eight vertical panels. The central aisle side of the blocks has a hinged outward opening door in a single vertical panel with frame stopped chamfered each side. Each door has pair of wrought iron decorative hinges and wrought iron tumbuckle. Tops of pew enclosures and doors are trefoil moulded.
THE PEWS AND PANELLING IN THIS AISLE WERE RESTORED IN MEMORY OF ROBERT CREEMER BURTON ROWE CHURCHWARDEN OF THIS CHURCH 1937 - 1951
DOOR TO TOWER - WEST PORCH - 18thC
Flush-boarded door in four panels with three cover strips over joints, brush
draught excluder at base and narrow arched head. Steel strap hasp to staple set
in stone surround, necked steel tower bolt to shoot in stone surround, both set
on wooden blocks to door face.
WEST DOOR - WEST PORCH - Ca 1947/8
(a) INTERIOR - Heavily constructed double door opening inwards framed and
ledged with vertical V jointed boarding, set in an oak frame with brass hinges.
Each leaf has two panels, with double ledge at base with inscription. Wrought
iron monkey tailed bolt at top of right hand leaf, wrought iron bolt at base of
right hand leaf. Spring loaded top and bottom right hand leaf, Suffolk latch
with turning handle left hand leaf. Mortice security lock left leaf with shield
shaped escutcheon. Wood encased rim lock with quatrefoil wrought iron key plate
and strap shoot. Memorial inscription engraved on lower right leaf in uppercase
Roman capitals.
(b) EXTERIOR - Four vertical boards in each leaf, two false wrought iron strap hinges terminating in fleur-de-lys design and fixed with square studs to each leaf. Wrought iron twisted looped handle, shield shaped key escutcheon.

OLD BELL FRAME - RINGING CHAMBER
Wooden frame for old bell, with top and bottom members and "N"
shaped struts, suspended at high level on wall with galvanised steel brackets.
CROSS
A plain wooden Latin Calvary Cross on an oblong two stepped base with four
circular wooden supports at each comer on the underside along with an inscribed
brass plaque.
MADE FROM THE ANCIENT CHURCHYARD RAILS BY A. F. WELDON
CANDLESTICKS (2)
Two matching wooden candlesticks with brass nozzles and curved wooden drip
pans sit upon tapered cylindrical stems decorated with two plain knots, one
central and the other above the domed circular feet.
ROOF
a) Chancel - A seven cant ceiled roof in 63 varying sized panels, flat board
with trefoil moulded ribs and single panel frieze beneath each side.
b) Nave - Four trusses, two end ones king post with double curved braces at top and bottom: Two central ones king post with single pair curved braces at top only:
c) Porch - Two trusses, slightly curved tie beams, central king post with four curved braces.
